PT-SBS515 includes three additional serial I/O and a parallel I/O portfor SPARC-based workstations. Each of the serial I/O ports will operateat rates up to 38.4 Kbaud and has all commonly-used modem controlsignals. The serial I/O functions are derived from an intelligentinterface on the SBus module, which does much of the low-level signalprocessing, relieving the workstation from a substantial burden inservicing these additional serial ports. In most applications, theseadditional ports can be added without a noticeable performance impact onthe overall workstation environment. The parallel I/O port on PT-SBS515gives users a bidirectional interface that is Centronics-compatible foreasy addition of printers and other peripherals that require a parallelinterface. The connection is through a DB-25, which has become a defacto PC standard for interfacing many printers and plotters. PT-SBS515is supplied with a comprehensive software installation disk that includesa loadable Streams-based serial I/O driver and a configurable parallelI/O driver.
